About the Band
Cast your mind back, back through the mists of time to the year 2013. A fresh-faced young songwriter, new to the Portland scene came up with a little ditty. He of course didn't want to keep this simple song to himself, and in the generous spirit of music he found a like minded friend. And so, with this little song, Joshua Metz (for that's the name of the songwriter) and Tony Guzman became Rainbow Electric. As Joshua will tell you, he thought about the welcoming, amiable attitude of the Rainbow Gathering, and what would happen if you plugged a rainbow in; metaphorically, and physically. The band has morphed and changed a lot over the years, with many talented and beloved players coming and going. But at its core, the band is still Joshua and Tony, grooving, dancing, singing and smiling.
After a long stint of drummers, all talented and prolific in their own ways, Joshua was rightfully frustrated. It was clear to him that all the drummers in Portland were either too busy for his band, or charged too much. Until one day, he asked a co-worker if he knew any drummers. "Yeah," Charlie said. "Me." And another piece of the Rainbow puzzle fell into place.
In the Spring of 2019, Joshua started jamming with a guitarist who lived upstairs. Jack was a good player, with a great ear for tone, and harmony. Best of all, he liked the same music as Joshua and the rest of the band. He started filling in on bass, but once the band heard his guitar playing they knew it was game over. Jack was now part of the Rainbow family.
To try and describe their music, style, and sound is a bit tricky. The band heartily embraces its influences, such as The Grateful Dead and Phish. But Joshua also writes an amazing amount of music; most of what the band plays is original. When pressed, most band members will tell you that the sound is funky-bluesy rock-and-roll. There is maybe a bit of bluegrass sprinkled around, and the band can get heavier on occasion. But mostly, they want their audience to get up and dance, as described in their song Messy Groove Addiction.
The band line-up, as described earlier, can change day to day, but for the most part, the members are;
- Joshua Metz-Guitar/Vocals. The songwriter. The bandleader.
- Tony Guzman-Bass/Vocals. The Tone-Zone. The low-end.
- Charles Odegaard-Hickmott-Drums. He hits stuff.
- Jack McGrane- Guitar/Vocals. Sweet harmony and shredding licks.
